NASA Abandons Rescue Mission and Faces Loss of Swift Observatory
After a failure in LINK's guidance system, NASA ended the attempt to boost the Swift Observatory, which is expected to re-enter the atmosphere in a few months.
NASA has halted the attempt to rescue the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory after the LINK rescue spacecraft experienced problems with its guidance system, according to the official announcement.
The plan was for the small probe built by Katalyst to push Swift about 150 miles higher into a safer orbit, but attitude-control failures prevented the planned capture and boost.
What Went Wrong with the Emergency Mission
The unprecedented undertaking was assembled in record time and used the LINK spacecraft, launched on July 3 aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL. Since then, Katalyst has faced ongoing problems with the guidance system that make it impossible to complete the docking and the raising of Swift.
Probability of Losing an Essential Observatory
Without the orbital raising, the Swift Observatory — launched in 2004 and originally designed for two years of operation — is expected to reenter the atmosphere and disintegrate in a few months. The loss means reduced capacity to detect rapid explosions in the universe, such as the powerful gamma-ray bursts, as well as losing an agile observer for flares from black holes and evolving comets.
The Technical Legacy and Next Steps
Even without completing the rescue, Katalyst said it will attempt a test approach with LINK to validate navigation and docking techniques that could serve future orbital-maintenance operations. NASA described the initiative as a 'first-of-its-kind' effort, also aimed at advancing the idea of satellites with docking points and replaceable parts in the future.
In a statement, NASA headquarters emphasized that the mission was valuable for speed and learning, despite not achieving the objective of extending Swift's operational life.
